The completion of the Wanaka CBD fibre broadband network has been regarded as paramount for the ability of local businesses to prosper and for the town to be able to attract business people wanting to relocate from the cities but yet still be able to compete with their city based counterparts. Wanaka a lifestyle and business destination is a reality for families that considering the move from the cities. Business and pleasure can now be successfully mixed with the town offering the ultrafast broadband network connectivity and a gateway through the international airport only 50 minutes drive away.

The Wanaka Chamber of Commerce, along with a group of Wanaka businesspeople, Queenstown Lakes District Council and Chorus, forged a public-private partnership to get fibre to the area. The new fibre network enables about 200 premises to access the connectivity. The Wanaka Chamber is now working with the Government and Chorus to bring fibre to the rest of Wanaka.

As part of the business development plan for the town, Wanaka has established a business innovation hub with the aim of making it easier for entrepreneurs to establish themselves in Wanaka.

The facilities, called “The Cell” are located in the central business area of Wanaka and are aiming to be a magnet for global entrepreneurs. The Cell is an new incubator-style facility, providing not only a physical office space, including desk space, phone, printing and Internet availability at accessible rates for small businesses, but mentoring and private equity investment contacts also.Further development of the building after opening will add meeting and calling rooms. There is a manager on site to co-ordinate activities.

The advantages are seen as not only being the physical facilities but the possibility of a collaborative and supportive environment evolving where “like minds” can meet.
